During the past year he has been prominent in promoting the rights of refugees in Maastricht and speaking out against deportations by the Dutch government. Haroon will discuss: - His life story, how he made his way from Afghanistan to the Netherlands, and his plans for the future - The general situation of Afghanistan at the moment - The deal signed between Afghanistan and the EU - How this deal affects the lives of Afghan refugees in Europe and how they are coping with many uncertainties After Haroon is finished speaking, the floor will be open for any questions the audience has for him about his situation or the refugee policy in general. Lecture on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict Is it still realistic today to expect the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to be resolved through a two-state solution? Robert Serry, former United Nations special coordinator for the Middle East peace process, will offer an insider perspective on the peace efforts during the three most recent failed peace initiatives and three wars in Gaza. He will share his reflections on walking the tight rope of diplomacy between Israel and Palestine. Offering fresh thinking on how to preserve prospects for a two-state solution, Serry examines the UN’s uneasy history in the Arab-Israeli conflict and provides a rare insight into the life of a United Nations Envoy in today’s Middle East. https://www.facebook.com/events/541938116188397/

This question will be addressed tonight by Robert Serry, who will base his lecture on his own long experience as UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process (2008-2015), UN Secretary-General’s Representative to the Palestine Liberation Organization and the Palestinian Authority and as ambassador. Robert Serry will offer an insider perspective on the peace efforts during the three most recent failed peace initiatives and three wars in Gaza. He will share his reflections on walking the tight rope of diplomacy between Israel and Palestine and his analysis of what has gone wrong and why a “one-state reality” may be around the corner. Offering fresh thinking on how to preserve prospects for a two-state solution, Serry examines the UN’s uneasy history in the Arab-Israeli conflict since partition was proposed in resolution 181 (1948) and provides a rare insight into the life of a United Nations Envoy in today’s Middle East. Seventy years after UN Partition resolution 181, fifty years after Security Council resolution 242, 4 months after president Trump’s announcement to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, and while Palestinian-Israeli tensions rise at this very moment, as protesters clash with soldiers alongside the Gaza-Israel border Serry will raise the question: is a two-state solution still viable? On April 26th, he will join us in Maastricht and talk about Climate Change, Population, and the Problem with Externality Arguments!
Maastricht Students for Liberty proudly presents Liberty Talks! - In our new format Liberty Talks! MSFL gives a wide variety of speakers the platform to talk about topics of contemporary interest. We thus hope to give the student population of Maastricht the opportunity to learn more about topics they are interested in. In our second event, we are proud to present Professor David Friedman, son of renowned economist Milton Friedman. He will hold a talk on Global Warming, Population, and the Problem with Externality Arguments. Friedman is an academic economist with a doctorate in physics who has spent the past twenty-two years teaching law at Santa Clara University. His first book, The Machinery of Freedom: Guide to a Radical Capitalism, was published in 1973 and includes a description of how a society with property rights and without government might function. There as elsewhere, he offers a consequentialist defense of libertarianism. Friedman's most recent non-fiction book, Future Imperfect: Technology and Freedom in an Uncertain World, examines the implications of a variety of technological revolutions that might happen over the next few decades. His current book project, not yet published, is Legal Systems Very Different from Ours, covering systems from Periclean Athens through modern Amish and Romany. He is also the author of two novels, one commercially published and one self-published, and, with his wife, a self-published medieval and renaissance cookbook and a larger self-published book related to their hobby of historical recreation.
